What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a type of chronic, non-degenerative, non-inflammatory arthritis. It is a syndrome of wide spread pain, mainly involving the muscles, sometimes involving ligaments, tendons, bursa and joints.
What are the symptoms?
The main symptom for fibromyalgia is muscle pain. Also included are fatigue, poor sleep, cold intolerance, stiffness, headaches, numbness, joint pain, weakness, swelling and tingling.
Associated conditions are allergies, anxiety disorder, concentration problems, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, joint dysfunction, chronic fatigue syndrome, and restless leg syndrome.
'Flare ups' of intense pain/fatigue can be triggered by weather conditions, cold-damp weather, hot-damp weather, certain foods, repetitive movements, too much or too little sleep, too much or too little exercise, emotional stress, or sitting in one position too long.
How to manage fibromyalgia.
There is no cure for fibromyalgia. People who suffer from this syndrome have found that their conditionis manageable through self-education and finding out what works for their body. A pro-active mentality is key to successfully dealing with Fm.
A helpful exercise routine might include stretches, especially in a hot shower, swimming in a warm-water pool, walking, and a variety of aerobic exercises without an excess of repetitive motions. Knowing your body's limits and varying the routine are necessary to making exercise a preventative measure.
Nutrition can relieve exacerbate the condition. Often sugar, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, and MSG can trigger episodes of increased pain. Dairy products, cold drinks, even raw fruit and vegetables have been known to affect some people adversely.
Regular massage is one of the few things that are helpful. Shortly weekly sessions of half-hour instead of a full hour may be recommended. Sometimes aromatherapy massage gives relief. I have found that it is highly effective in giving pain relief as well as maintaining wellness with fibromyalgia.
